Massage Cupping

In traditional Chinese medicine, cupping is used to improve the energy flow throughout the body. The cups can be placed over the traditional energy collection points, which are also stimulated during acupuncture and shiatsu massage. A healthy energy flow is thought to improve both the physical and mental well-being of the client.

Cupping is a modality that finds its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. The practice uses cups to create a vacuum seal on areas of the body. The suction created by this seal brings blood to the surface of the skin and is thought to help expel negative energies from the body.

Some of the main benefits of cupping are:

  • Improved Energy Flow
  • Improved Range of Motion
  • Improved Flexibility
  • Pain Relief
  • Loosen Muscles
  • Relaxation

Disclaimer: Although cupping is not painful, the recipient commonly walks away with circular bruises on the areas where the cups were applied.

Gua Sha (Muscle Scraping)

Gua Sha is a 2000-year-old Eastern medicine practice. By applying the precise round edged tool against the skin, it releases adhesions underneath that were causing pain and impingement.

Benefits of Gua Sha

Increased Blood Flow:
Scraping causes a rapid surge of blood circulation to the affected area, this causes an immediate decrease in muscle pain.  In fact, some participants have reported pain relief in untreated parts of their body as well.

Pain Suppression:
Pain suppression has been known to persist for at least 2 days, and in some cases as long as a week after scraping! The practice of Gua Sha activates the part of your brain responsible for pain suppression.  The same system that suppresses pain in times of stress or sudden trauma.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects:
Although scraping does produce redness on the treated area, it also reduces inflammation throughout the rest of your body.

Pain Relief:
In a clinical trial, patients with chronic neck pain received Gua Sha treatments to their neck and upper back.  After 7 days they showed a 26% decrease in overall pain and a 51% decrease in pain related to movement. This was said to be more effective than heat therapy!

And More:
Gua Sha has been shown effective in alleviating headache pain and relieving the symptoms of asthma, coughing, wheezing, nausea, flu, and bronchitis.
